I had the pleasure of doing makeup on my beautiful mother while were were visiting my hometown a few months back, which I loved. It is fun for me to do makeup on other people, and it allows me to see what different skin types really need in terms of makeup. Since she is more mature (but as beautiful as always), doing her makeup was a new challenge for me. I learned a lot of different makeup tips for mature skin while doing her makeup for a few weeks.
It has always been my thought that the reason that so many companies and brands make so many different types of makeup is so that we don’t need to change ourselves one bit as we age or as we get older. We just need to change the makeup that we use and the way that we apply it.
As our skin changes when we age, our makeup needs to change as well. Here are some helpful makeup tips for mature skin to hydrate, plump, minimize fine lines and wrinkles and add youthful glow.

Makeup Tips For Mature Skin
Use a hydrating and blurring make up primer underneath foundation. This will help to plump and refresh the skin and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while giving you a smooth canvas that your makeup sticks to all day. The BECCA Cosmetics – Backlight Priming Filter is perfect for this. The Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Primer would also work, it just isn’t quite as luminous.
Again, hydration and a dewy look are crucial in foundation too. You don’t want to use a foundation that is too matte and heavy on the skin because this will accentuate the lines in the face and make you look one-dimensional. The L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation is a beautiful and light foundation that works well with mature skin. If you prefer a more traditional liquid foundation, Loreal also makes a True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Makeup for you.
Applying concealer like this creates lift and volume to cheeks.A light under eye concealer can be a great anti aging friend. Using this under the eyes can help brighten and create an illusion of lift underneath the eyes when used in an upside down triangle, like in the guide photo to the right. Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer is a good option.
Prime the eyes for shadow. This will help to prevent creasing on the lids and help the shadow to stick, versus transferring into the folds. This is especially beneficial if you have hooded eyes or a lot of extra skin around the eyes. I love the Urban Decay Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion because it plumps, smooths, hydrates and blurs fine lines while making sure your eyeshadow stays crease free for 24 hours.
Use satin or matte eyeshadows. Using anything too metallic will draw attention the texture or lines on and around the eyes. I love this Tarte Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette, which is full of matte shadows that work well with mature skin and blend beautifully to minimize tugging on your tender eye skin.
For an every day flattering look, I suggest applying the four colors as shown in the guide photo below because the light neutral shades will brighten up the eye area while also creating a lifted effect on the outer eye. Make sure you blend all of the colors very well into each other so you have no harsh lines.
For special events, you can substitute the “best friend” color in your crease and the “bombshell” color on your Outer V. As skin ages, makeup routines need to change. Helpful makeup tips for mature skin to hydrate, plump, minimize fine line and wrinkles and add youthful glow. This Eyeshadow Application Guide will brighten the eyes and add lift to the outer eyes.
Highlight is not necessarily a good thing. Highlighting is huge right now on younger skin, but on more mature skin, adding a super shimmery highlight to the cheekbones can draw a lot of attention to potentially unwanted areas and emphasize texture. Using a lighter powder option that creates a “glow from within” look versus a straight highlight that contains too much shimmer is a better option. Try the hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders for a “lit from within” glow.
Satin, Creme, or semi matte lipsticks are the type you want to use. Anything too glossy or too matte can accentuate the wrinkles and lines around the lips. A touch of sheen will give a more youthful look. Try the MAC lipsticks in the creme and satin formulas. Blankety is a gorgeous nude color, and Captive is beautiful for a little deeper, rosy lip. At the end of the day, these are just tips. There are NO RULES when it comes to makeup. You wear whatever makes you most comfortable and makes you feel beautiful:)
