Don’t Pass on the Spinach- Tip Tuesday

As I was making breakfast this morning, I threw some spinach into my omelette (recipe & more) like I always do, because I love the stuff. Then I wondered, why does spinach get such a bad rap sometimes?

Memories from childhood always come back when I use this food… Who else was disappointed when they realized that eating a can of spinach will not make you strong like Pop-Eye? My brother’s thought it was the end all.

Let’s be honest, to most, spinach is not the most appealing of all vegetables. Eaten raw on its own, it has a very distinct flavor that seems to have a “love it or hate it” kind of appeal.

I used to be a spinach hater, I’ll admit it. But, ever since I discovered the amazing health benefits and the versatility that this leafy little guy has, I switched team! Love me some spinach!

Lesson for this Tip Tuesday: Don’t underestimate the power of spinach!

How to Use Spinach in Your Meals

I am not a nutritionist, but I have done plenty of research and reading when it comes to my diet. A serving of spinach not only has 20% of your daily recommended fiber, it is also really high in Vitamin A, which helps us get that glowing, beautiful skin we all want! Not to mention it’s packed full of antioxidants, helps with bone strength, cardiovascular health and boosts immunity. Are you sold yet?

Breakfast- If you have been following Motherhood and Merlot for a while (love you all for that!) then you know what a huge fan of smoothies I am. It is my go-to breakfast and sometimes even lunch. I was a little apprehensive at first about throwing something as strong-flavored as spinach into my fruit smoothie. But, it is DELICIOUS. I drink my Lean Green Smoothie probably 3-4 times a week.

Adding it to any kind of egg dish is also a great idea! It cooks down to a mild flavor and just adds some bonus nutrients to your breakfast dish. Egg-tastic delight!

Snacks- Broil Spinach sprinkled with a little sea salt and pepper for a few minutes. It’s better than chips! Well… better for you at least:)

Lunch- Add it to any sandwich or make a salad out of it. I love the combo of spinach and strawberries in a salad.

Dinner- Saute it down with some apple cider vinegar, steam it, stuff it in some chicken breast with feta cheese… the list goes on and on.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with this veggie goodness in any of your meals. It provides such great benefits for our health and wellness and can be a delicious addition to our good eats (check out more meal plan ideas here)!
